Your Pet’s Favorite Store Can Be An Opportunity For You!
In 1988, Jack Berry and Harry Shallop, two veterans of the retail and wholesale grocery trade, had a terrific idea. They decided to bring supermarket-style convenience and value to the pet food and supply industry. Jack and Harry’s new store featured wide aisles with neat well-stocked display shelves, helpful overhead signs, ample parking, convenient hours and many of the other amenities that shoppers always liked about supermarkets. This novel retailing format struck a responsive chord with pet owners and today there are over 160 Pet Supplies “Plus” stores throughout the country. Every year, more than 1.6 million dogs, cats and other pets visit Pet Supplies “Plus” with their owners.
Pet Supplies “Plus” Stores Pet Supplies “Plus” stores are located on high-traffic streets, in high-visibility buildings. Our goal is to make our stores as convenient as possible for our customers and their pets.
That’s one reason why we limit the size of our stores to 5,000 square feet in small markets, and 7,000 to 9,000 square feet in larger metropolitan areas — Large enough to offer consumers the widest selection, while still holding down operating costs.
And, thanks to our efficient distribution system, we are able to offer a product selection at our stores that’s as large, or larger, than any in our industry. All of our stores receive weekly deliveries, ensuring that a large and varied selection of merchandise is always in stock, without the need for excessive backup inventory.
Types of Franchises Available Pet Supplies “Plus” offers two different types of franchises to qualified franchisees. In smaller markets which are capable of supporting one to three locations, we grant single unit franchises to Owner/Operators. In larger markets, we grant franchises to Area Developers who agree to open a specified number of locations within a designated area. Very large metropolitan areas with populations of more than one million may be divided among different Area Developers.
Franchise Requirements Single unit franchisees must be active owner/operators. Retail experience is helpful, but not essential. Pet Supplies “Plus” has a comprehensive franchisee training and orientation program.
Area Developers must have at least one individual in their organization who has extensive experience in retail management and is responsible for day to day store operations. This requirement is based on our firm conviction that the long-term success of Pet Supplies “Plus” must be built on consistently reliable store operations.
Prior to entering into an Area Development or single unit franchise agreement with Pet Supplies “Plus”, potential franchisees must demonstrate that they have sufficient capital to operate and develop their stores.
