Pirtek – The global leader in On-Site Hose replacement.
Operating since 1980 and with annual sales of more than $80 million, Pirtek sells and services custom hydraulic and industrial hoses and fittings. Pirtek (pronounced Purr-tek) is a derivative of Pirelli Technology, the tire and rubber giant. Custom hydraulic hoses are used in a variety of industries including agriculture, manufacturing, food processing, construction, transport and engineering.
While most replacement hoses are supplied as spare parts by original equipment manufacturers or sold within hydraulic equipment supply shops, Pirtek offers two specialized options. Hoses are made to order and installed from on-site mobile vans stocked with the full range of hoses and fittings, or sold over the counter at the retail hose service centers that serve as home base to the mobile fleet. This competitive edge has enabled the company to become a worldwide leader in the industry.
Total Product Range
In addition to hydraulic hose products, Pirtek offers a comprehensive mix of products like industrial rubber, PVC, thermoplastic and specialty hoses. Many customers of hydraulic hose products have always had additional demand for other hose types. But there had never been a successful integration of these broad products under one umbrella. Today that integration is complete and is incorporated within the Pirtek Hose Center Network. Customers can now source their entire fluid power, industrial and specialist hoses, fittings and accessories from their Pirtek Hose Center.
Mobile Service
Each Pirtek Center is equipped to provide rapid response site services to its customers in the field. Mobile units are established as workshops of equipment and inventory to cater for the breakdown demands of the client; making hose assemblies available right at the point of demand. This response time can potentially save customers thousands of dollars in avoided downtime.
The Pirtek Franchise – A System Geared Toward Your Success
Since 1980, the Pirtek network has honed its business techniques into an effective system with revenues growing system-wide more than 20% each year. In 1996, Pirtek USA began the development of the Pirtek system here in the United States.
Pirtek USA has the advantage of using techniques developed through years of research by the Pirtek system worldwide. With Pirtek, you have years of experience and expertise at your side in this over $1 billion market.
Whether it’s assisting you in finding a suitable location, conducting a regional market analysis or negotiating sales contracts with national customers that benefit local centers, the Pirtek strategic system supports you every step of the way.
The Competitive Advantage
You’ll be surprised to learn your investment secures much more than the Pirtek brand name. Pirtek franchisees are investing in hard assets, as well as in their future. As a franchisee, you own or lease all your center’s equipment, an extensive inventory and the accounts receivable. As the business grows, you have the security of knowing you are not only generating revenues each year, but you are also increasing capital at the same time.
Complete Training Pirtek starts you off on the right foot with comprehensive business training both at our National Headquarters and in-the-field. The support continues with on-going product and sales training, as well as field product and systems education. Even if you do not know anything about hydraulics or the hose industry, it is your business management skills that are the key to making your Pirtek Center a success. A mechanical background is not necessary! Pirtek USA assists franchisees in training employees in the technical aspects of custom hydraulic hose assemblies, hose fittings and installation of the products.
The Best In Franchise Support
Pirtek UK was named the “1997 Franchisor of the Year” by the British Franchise Association. Among a prestigious group of franchisor finalists, judges chose Pirtek for its focus on franchise support and overall relationship between Pirtek and its franchisees.

This article written by Pirtek in 2001 sounds good, but now almost eight years later what happened?
As of early 2009, here is what I know. Many Pirtek locations have failed. Some Pirtek locations have failed more than once! How is that possible you ask? PirtekUSA and its owner, Morgan Arundel, simply wait until a struggling Pirtek franchisee will take pennies on the dollar for the Pirtek business. Some times, like in the case with the Pirtek in Portland Oregon, the location fails and then is sold again years later.Paul Gorny, settled for $90,000 for his Clearwater location. Later, Clearwater was sold for more than 3 times that to its current struggling partners, Paul And Bob. Poor Paul and Bob. The new owner starts over, new lease, new equipment etc. The case with Pirtek Nashville is slightly different, the first owner walks away from the business, Pirtek takes over as company store. PirtekUSA boosts sales, doctors the books so the business looks better than it is, sells business to new owner, new owner files bankruptcy about two years later, PirtekUSA takes over business again. In the case of Nashville, thats three owners, two failures.
Pirtek San Diego was for sale, now its off the market as a company owned location run by Gil Moyers. Gil is a PirtekUSA employee and is the same guy that prepped Ontario to be sold, its had three owners, Gil has prepped other stores, so be careful when dealing with Pirtek and Gil. Finally since 2001 the following stores have been Terminated, closed or bankrupted or taken over by PirtekUSA, Houston, Dallas, Tucson, Portland, Miami, Tampa, Clearwater, Pittsburgh, Allentown, Santa Ana, Anaheim, Ontario,Boston, Fairfield( two Locations), Mobile, New Orleans and there are more. Additionally, there are many Pirtek locations just about out of business. Out of 38 locations, minus the company operated Pirteks, I estimate there are only 8 locations that produce a meaningful profit for the owners. That is basically an 80% failure/closure rate. Even if my estimate is way off, it is still too high to warrant the $550,000 risk. If you have any questions, or would like to know more about Pirtek and the many failures please contact me at fixxme@aol.com or call 813-318-1258. Have a great day, Scott

“Let me reply to Mr. Layer’s email. I am a Pirtek franchisee located in
Detroit. I am in the worst economy in the U.S. The Pirtek System is one of
the best franchises around. In fact, as I see a number of other restaurants
and other franchisees fail, I am really glad to be part of the Pirtek
System. While I keep reading about a lot of other businesses sales go down
in the past year, in fact, my sales are up over 20% over last year and I
just set an all time record! The Pirtek System works for those that follow
the Pirtek System. Is it possible to fail? Absolutely, just like in any
business. But, I will tell you that I have now opened my second Center
which is doing great and I have signed on for my third. The Pirtek System
is a system that works and gives you a great chance to make some real money.
But, you have to follow the Pirtek System.”
Thanks, Eli.

I think it is interesting that only one or two franchisees reply to my Blogs, not bad when you consider there are 35 franchisees.
But lets look at what they say a little closer! First I never e-mailed Eli, so whats he talking about? , what were your sales figures?, tell us more Eli! Please!
I suggest you call some of your fellow franchisees and listen to what they have to say. Who have you talked to and what were the comments? All the Pirtek locations I called are either out of business, company owned due to bankruptcy or are struggling and on the verge of closing up. Except for you, every Pirtek owner/manager I talked to say that sales are down this year and all are below forecast. One said he “will close too if things don’t pick up”. Answer why Miami, Tucson, Portland, Pittsburgh, Anaheim, Santa Ana, Boston, Two locations in Connecticut, Clearwater, Tampa, Dallas, Houston, San Diego, and many other Pirtek locations are either out of business or struggling to stay open or have been terminated? Why did one franchisee disclose his P&L showing huge losses? One franchisee says Pirtek is too front end loaded. Why, until I started blogging about it, were so many Pirtek locations for sale cheap? Ontario was auctioned off after it failed. Eli, make sure you answer the phone when a prospective franchisee calls you. Be ready to at least tell the truth, I am glad you are supposedly doing well, but since you have not disclosed how much time and money you have invested and how much money you have borrowed and never once disclosed your gross sales or ROI, its hard for me to believe. Either way, owning a Pirtek franchise that generates little more than a low paying job for its owner is not my idea of a success.
I think buying and installing foreign hose in Detroit is a big mistake. Does it feel good selling hose that comes from Italy? Eli, I think it is safe to say you are the exception, not the rule, more Pirtek locations have closed, gone bankrupt or closed the doors than have been successful. If you have any questions you can call me at 813-318-1258 or e-mail me at fixxme@aol.com. Thanks, Scott

As you know from reading my blogs I am not a fan of Pirtek. I have tried to warn prospective business owners of the risks associated with buying a Pirtek Franchise. You may recall that just four months ago Mr. Johnson, owner of Pirtek Plano(Dallas Tx), was very complimentry of his Pirtek Franchise. Mr. Johnson contridicted my statements regarding the value of Pirtek. David Johnson further stated that business was so good that he had signed up for his second Pirtek Location.
You will be interested to know that based on numerous calls to Pirtek Plano, 972-423-1111, and e-mails directed to me, that Mr. Johnson has closed the Pirtek Plano location. It looks like the mustard is coming off the Hot Dog.
If you have any questions regarding Pirtek or the many closures and Bankruptcies please call me, 813-318-1258, or e-mail me fixxme@aol.com Thanks to Ron and the many others that have contacted me. Kiwi, are we still having fun?

Pirtk UK are just the same Scott, ask about Slough, Cambridge, Bridgewater, Poole & more
Not only terminated, CCTV ripped off walls whilst they STEAL everything to stop you trading. Do some digging a get court records for the Ltd companies that ran the above centres in the UK over the last 10 years.
All on record, this is not just any franchise, it is corrupt to the core & we have full records to prove it.

Pirtek continues to stumble and continues the path to bankruptcy. Pirteks’ own consolidated financial statements show a serious decline in sales over the past five years, that would be 2006 through 2010. The Pirtek locations here in the USA are nothing like their cousins in Australia. In fact, Pirtek here is a derivative of the struggling British Pirtek, Not the generally successful Australian system, which recently opened in North America. It appears that PirtekUSA has problems and Australia is getting ready to take over when the USA Master franchise contract runs out in 8 years. Pirtek USA is plagued by poor management, on going litigation against its own franchisees, and product prices marked up by as much as six times. There has to be something wrong with a franchise if more of them have failed than have ever been successful. The numbers do not lie at PirtekUSA, but people do!. In fact Pirteks’ own financials show a loss at EVERY SINGLE company owned store. If PirtekUSA can’t do it profitably who can? Before ever investing in any franchise examine the numbers, talk to all past franchisees, as well as all the current franchisees. (there are only 30 current franchisees now, but about 40 past franchisees) Before investing in any franchise make sure the Franchisor is solid and profitable AND that its Franchisees are profitable. The hydraulic hose business is very competitive and has almost no barriers to entry. However, at Pirtek, the franchise is extremely front end loaded, while the non-franchised competition can buy product from multiple sources, Pirtek franchsiees are forced to buy only from the Franchisor at above Market prices. In more than 13 years of franchising PirtekUSA has only managed to create more failures than successes. If you want more detailed information please contact me. Thanks, and have a great day. It is important to investigate contributors like Scott Layer to determine for yourself if his rants have merit. In talking to existing Pirtek owners, I learned that Scott took the franchisor to court and lost. It would seem he is determined to undermine the hard work of the Pirtek owners that are in the system.
Unfortunately, every franchise system has owners who choose to fail because they do not follow the franchise program. Over the past few years many franchise systems have experienced heavy losses during the recession. Just look at big brands like Quizno’s. Some failures, like Scott become so obsessed by their own failure they feel the need to justify it on web sites like this. Brands like Quizno’s, UPS and many others also have a “Scott Layer”. From what I can tell Mr. Layer is another failure with a big chip on his shoulder.
While investigating Mr. Layer (just Google the email address he posts in his various comments littering the web) I found he likes to advertise himself as woman on a very adult web site. Be warned it is a very adult web site! I also learned that he would drink heavily in front of his employees, spent much of his day at Gentlemens clubs and I also learned that he has been arrested for DV. I wonder if he would admit or deny all that on this site?
The fact is that people like Scott, have too much time on their hands and fail in life because they do not use it constructively!!!

From what I have learned Scott is correct. Pirtek is a bad investment. Obviously his posts have merit, because all they come back with are personal attacks. Nothing in the previous post relates to business, and nothing disputes all the Pirtek Bankruptcies and Pirtek failures. Linking Pirtek to UPS and Quizno’s is perfect. UPS has been involved in more legal battles than just about any franchise and Quizno’s has a terrible reputation too. Pirtek has no brand and a poor record, thanks to to Scott Layer we now know the truth.

Mario L. Herman, a D.C.-based franchise attorney, said the current credit climate has forced franchisers to be more responsible for their franchisees’ success, which in turn will help the entire market. In the past, Herman joked that anybody whose check cleared was allowed to open a franchise. With the credit crunch, franchisers have had to be more realistic in their selections and ultimately put their money where their mouth is, he said.
Franchisees also have to go into the business with realistic expectations, Herman said.
“Franchising is not a ticket for riches,” he said. “For most people, it is just buying them a job, and a low-paying job at that.”
