Jiffy Lube: Leader of the Fast Lube Industry

Jiffy Lube International, Inc. (JLI) is the largest franchising organization in the rapidly expanding fast lube industry. It began in 1979 as an association of seven centers in the Western United States and has grown to more than 2,000 centers in 49 states. About 70 percent of Jiffy Lube service centers are franchised; the rest are company owned and operated.

Jiffy Lube is a wholly owned subsidiary of Houston-based Pennzoil-Quaker State Company, a leading worldwide automotive consumer products company that markets Pennzoil® and Quaker State® brand motor oils, the number one and number two selling motor oils in the United States. The company also markets a complete line of automotive car care products including Axius™ auto accessories, Blue Coral® and Classic® waxes and washes, Black Magic® and Westley’s® tire and wheel care products, Medo® air fresheners, Rain-X® glass treatments, Gumout®, Snap® and The Outlaw® maintenance chemicals and Slick 50® engine treatments.

The switch to the installed motor oil market continues to accelerate, and about half the growth in the installed market is projected to go to the fast lube category. Over the next five years, the fast lube industry will need to expand to service more than 120 million vehicles a year, compared to about 90 million a year in 1998.

In early 1999, Jiffy Lube combined forces with Q Lube, the fast lube subsidiary of the former Quaker State Corporation. The combining of Jiffy Lube and Q Lube operations is a result of the merger between parent companies Pennzoil and Quaker State. Combined, the Jiffy Lube-Q Lube retail network of fast lube centers totals nearly 2,300 locations nationwide. Conversion of Q Lube centers to the Jiffy Lube brand is currently underway and is expected to be complete by mid 2000.

RISE OF FAST LUBES

Jiffy Lube achieved its prominent position by recognizing an opportunity and seizing it. During the 1970s, full-service gas stations began to decline. Since then, more than 100,000 of them have closed and many others have converted to self-service, gasoline-only operations, leaving millions of motorists without their traditional source of oil change and associated services.

Many people turned to do-it-yourself oil changes, but environmental concerns are causing this method to decline in popularity. And, because of their busy lifestyles, many Americans simply don’t have the time or the inclination to change their own oil. In addition, a majority of U.S. households now have two working spouses. This has created a greater dependence on cars, and it has become a major inconvenience to leave a car for half a day or longer to be serviced at a dealer’s service department or at one of the remaining full-service gas stations.

A UNIQUE STRATEGY

A number of features set Jiffy Lube apart from other fast lube operations.

We’re an experienced, well-organized company that is flexible enough to respond to changes in the marketplace. Each Jiffy Lube outlet is a dedicated fast oil change service center, providing fluid maintenance services only. We don’t sell brakes, shocks or mufflers. We service millions of vehicles every year with a very high level of customer service.
