Here is the deal with Jacka** Hewitt.

Jackson Hewitt took our money and ooops…. forgot to file the form for me. They say they lost the paperwork. This was after the fee of $450 the charged me to process. I could have done it myself cheaper

I wanted experts to handle my filing, since I had an inheritance to claim. Then I went home and checked my taxes on a tax program my wife bought, and they were WAY off on the refund.

They boast that their people are experts, but I should have stuck to a different company I never had a problem with. But since I recently moved into the area, I figured that it would be fine to use Jackson Hewitt.

Jackson Hewitt offices are franchises. They are owned by individuals. This one was in TURLOCK, CA and the office manager is Rachelle Hardy. She was no help in resolving the issue. She didn’t really seem to care!

I am glad I have found this site. It is true, Jackson Hewitt is a mess of a company. They made mistakes with my taxes and my Son’s family.

I know that they are a franchise, but there should be tighter regulations and the main company should watch them closer.

I used Jackson Hewitt in 2003. They made a mistake that almost lead to an audit. Check out their record on the BBB. It speaks for itself. My brother now works for an H&R block, and he told me that 35% of the new customers are ex- Jackson Hewitt clients.
Funny, no matter how many times I told them they made a mistake, they never once apologized.
Don’t waste your time with this company. Check around in your community. Maybe you can find a 10 year old with knowledge of arithmetic. They would do better.

Funny the things you come across on the Internet. I share the save feelings on this company as the rest of you.
In 2002 I went to a Jackson Hewitt in my town, and although they did get the numbers correct (yes I doubled checked it at home) they charged me about $250 and waited till the last minute to file it. The receptionist said that I “…somehow got lost in their system”.
    That is a bad answer.
I mean I know they deal with a lot of people, but that is a bad way to run the business.
I decided not to use them again and I purchased a good tax program. It worked well. Cost me about $105. Took me a few minutes extra, but saved me some $. I figure it will pay for itself in the long run anyway.
So, there you have it. Another unhappy J/H customer.

    Thanks.

Oh, also. Has anyone ever heard of one of these places getting sued by an individual? I would be interested to know if that has ever happened. Seems like with all the bad press out there, someone has had to sued them.

    I will check back.

    Thanks again, T

Here’s my story, my old post, but one worth reading again:

Jackson Hewitt took our money and didn’t file our taxes …..

We did our taxes for 2002 with jackson hewitt. they said at the time we finished, that they don’t take checks because they were having problems with checks and would only take cash. we gave them cash the next day ( of course we have a receipt) and my husband and i asked them did they send our tax return in electronically and the man at jackson hewitt said “yes” and would get our state refund within a week.

well it’s been over a week and after depending on our refund and it not being in our check account after over a week, i checked online at the state refund station and they stated that our taxes have not been processed. after my husband called jackson hewitt, they tried to say that we didn’t pay and we faxed our receipt to them.

but in the meanwhile, we’re screwed with no refund and no one acts like they want to take care of our taxes. they made promises of services not rendered. poor business tended to the poor.

My story is a lot like others I’ve seen posted on the internet. They charged me almost $300 and didn’t send the file on time. Now I’m dealing with penalties WITH INTEREST and nothing but excuses that don’t solve the problem.

I tried to contact the regional manager and even the president Mike Lister - no response. I was trying to get their headquarters to look into the Austin airport office thinking it might help them clean up their act. It seems all you need is the money to start a franchise and you can have a JH store. They don’t care either. Apparently they’re individually owned, so I can’t speak for any other location, but I’ve learned my lesson and wanted to spread the word - DON’T USE JACKSON HEWITT, THEY SCREW UP SIMPLE RETURNS!!

  • JACKSON HEWITT DOES A REALLY BAD JOB on November 8th, 2004 at 10:53 pm

Here is something I posted before to warn others of Jackson Hewitt – they are the worst

Jackson Hewitt - told was approved for rapid check - but then wasn’t approved - tax return hassles

I am writing to complain about Jackson Hewitt & Santa Barbara bank. I have always went with H&R Block but this year they opened a new store and I tried them, big mistake! I have always been approved for a rapid check at H&R and was told at Jackson Hewitt I was approved right there in the office. I was not. I got a letter from Santa Barbara bank saying I was not after 10 days of not hearing anything about my money. Not to mention that the preparer at Jackson Hewitt messed up my return and put the deductions down wrong and I had to call the IRS to find out what was going on with my return and that it had an error!

All the while being told by the people at Jackson Hewitt “keep calling back it will be here anytime” I took my return to H&R block and they looked over it for free and found the error in minutes and charged me nothing. I took it back to Jackson & Hewitt who refiled it and fixed the error and suppossedly took off the preparer’s fee but after getting the notice from Sant Barbara bank that I was turned down for RAL, I find that my tax return in being deposited into an account at Santa Barbara bank and they will charge me $25.00 account set up fee and a &14.00 fee for something I have yet to get a straight answer for. I filed on the 6th, today is the 14th and still no refund, but it is “suppossed” to be here on the 21st of Feb.

You better read the fine print because all of that is in there and yes I signed it with out reading all 10 pages of the crap and theres nothing you can do about it once you apply for a RAL, and like the guy who complained on this website earlier, yes if you owe certain people money (which I do not) they can take it right out of your refund. They do not explain to people all of this stuff at Jackson Hewitt and after trying to get some help with finding out if my corrected return was accepted and whats going on with my money at Jackson Hewitt customer service, all I got was a rude cust. service rep asking me “well they apologized for the error and they are going to refund your fee’s, what else do you want them to do?” “How about find where my money is? for starters and explain to people you are going to team up with Santa Barbara bank who will get “money for nothing” if your RAL is declined.

I could get it direct deposit from the IRS as quick as they will have my money and the IRS is free! In my opinion these people are loan sharks and they are preying on the American public and being deceptive. Do you know at the office I am still being told I was approved for the RAL when Santa Barbara themselves told me there is no way to tell right then in the office? They just lied to me. But this is Jackson Hewitts first year in our small town and if I can help it, their last as I am not the only one who has had problems here. Word of mouth travels fast and word of keyboard travels even faster. Next year I will file with e-file and not pay anybody anything, but if I do need the money fast, like I did this year to take a trip (I have had to cancel and lost my $250 deposit I sent, due to being told “you will have it in 48 hours for sure” (mind you 10 days has gone by ) I will go back to H&R Block if I need it real bad, but as for Jackson Hewitt & Santa Barbara bank, this is our money that we worked hard for all year, you need to be plain and honest and not misleading to people.

I dont mind paying stuff I was made aware of but your $25.00 fee to “open my account” and $14.00 fee for bogus stuff just because my RAL was not approved and you cant charge me the $80.00 for it you want to make it up somewhere else is robbery, come on even Jessie James used a gun! I have talked to 2 Santa Barbara represenatives today and one said the supervisor might overturn the declined RAL and the next said “that never happens” , why have I had to do all the leg work on all this, I thought that’s why I paid someone else to do my taxes and even purchased a $28.00 gold guarantee, shame, shame, just a note, this new Johnny tax lately called Liberty Tax Service who had people standing out on the street dressed like the statue of liberty handing out coupons for their service (ha ha) was started by the Hewitt guy of Jackson & Hewitt, for what its worth.

I don’t know what to do, I sent my franchise fee $26,000.00 along with spending about $20,000 on additional equipment for the business to Get a business doing here in Little Rock. We didn’t have a large based and “supported” tax preparation business, lust some locals. After speaking with Curtis, the representative for Jackson Hewitt he assured me I would be the only Jackson Hewitt in the local area. Not less than 6 month later, another office opens up right here in town. Curtis very clearly promised this would be my territory, no other Jackson Hewitt could open an office until the population changes to support additional offices. Additionally, I have now tried to contact Curtis, he will not return my calls, I called the Corp number, 1-800-475-2904. They deny that Jackson Hewitt would make such a promise. So far I have had to lay off half of my employees, and it appears to still be a non-profit business….anyone have the same experience?

yes, they overchareged me to do ral to get my funds back in two days. I believe they don’t realize that they didn’t apologize and owe people funds in retrun in this matter. I am sure someone is in the process of suing jackson in this case. So, if you get a letter in the mail about getting over charged from jackson for ral checks please send it back in on the due date.
