Census Data Shows More Women Starting Home-Based Businesses

Miami Herald: “The number of privately held, women-owned businesses in the United States grew 14.3 percent from 1997 to 2002, according to Census Bureau statistics compiled by the National Women’s Business Council.”

The number of women-owned businesses in Indiana is growing at nearly four times the rate of all business combined. Women also play a vital role in the work force, occupying not only traditional jobs but jobs once considered male-only domains. In conjunction with Women’s History Month, here a few statistics about women and work.

63 percent — Chance your tax return this year will be prepared by a woman; 63 percent of tax preparers are women

250,000 — Estimated number of women lawyers in the United States

78,000 — Estimated number of women police officers in the United States

8,500 — Estimated number of women firefighters in the United States

17.5 percent — Growth in women-owned businesses in the United States, 1997-2002, in nontraditional areas such as agriculture, mining, manufacturing, transportation and wholesale trade

10.4 percent — Growth in women-owned businesses in the United States, 1997-2002, in traditional areas such as retail, finance, services, insurance and real estate

Idaho and Wyoming (tie), Utah, Nevada and Arizona — In order, top- five states for growth and expansion of women owned businesses, 1997- 2002

    I wish I started reading your blog earlier. This study is inspiring for women! I recall someone telling me that he thinks women have this natural inclination towards entrepreneurship.
