Luxury Cinema Business

By on June 15, 2004 in Ideas

Dan Sherman is just full of ideas. Here’s his most recent one about a luxury cinema business:

Why not create a cinema experience for the well-to-do? Build a one screen theater (or renovate one of the old downtown style theaters), put luxurious leather, reclining seats in it that are spaced nicely so you’re not sharing elbow room with a pathetic, smelly guy next to you. Then charge a flat fee per person and all refreshments are free. If you charged $25, $30, $35 a head (whatever the market would bear), you could make out like a bandit because your overhead would be much smaller (don’t need 16 year olds with an attitude getting people their $7 Reeces bags). Just have a very classy (and immaculately clean) self serve refreshment bar where your customers can grab some candy, popcorn, coke… whatever they need for the show.

Muvico does something similar to this at their theater in Boca Raton, FL. For about double their normal ticket price you can reserve a spot in one of their six balcony theaters, with valet parking and popcorn included. Their upper level is 21+, tho nobody has ever stopped my teenage brother from accompanying me, and it features a full liquor bar and restaurant at typical Boca (luxury) prices.

They don’t really do enough to sell it on the web site, but for anyone that has experienced The Premier it is hard to go back to ordinary.

Yeah, ‘Premier’ seating is popular in Australia…many theatres have a section with super comfortable louge chairs, and they typically have a separate entrance with a bar so that you can enjoy a glass of wine and a cheese plate before the movie. Seating also has side tables for your refreshments.

The difference with Dan’s idea is that the food/wine is not included in the ticket…they charge double+ for the ticket and then you pay for the refreshments!! Still it is popular, I guess because you don’t have to deal with the crowds, have a nice seat, can take your wine/beer into the threatre and a garaunteed great view of the screen.
