CNN:

You’ve opted to stay home to care for the kids. But you wouldn’t mind making some extra income during those hours between sending your charges off to school and picking them up again.

You’re certainly not alone. Women own more than 6 million small businesses and 5 million women with children under 18 worked part-time in 2003, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Here’s how some people are going about making some extra money.

CNN then goes on to list businesses for stay at home moms:

  1. Mystery shopping
  2. Personal chefs
  3. Gift baskets
  4. Embroidery

In my experience mom’s who want to work at home may be interested in these things.

My wife loves medical transcription though. It’s high tech and professional these days.

While she’d also gladly get paid to shop as a mystery shopper and do online surveys, like many work at home mom’s, she’s looking for steady income at a decent rate.

Many MT’s gross $25 per hour or more. That’s a pretty good rate, especially when someone in a rural area like us can make that and - thanks to the web and DSL - work for any medical provider who needs a transcriptionist in the whole country.

I think there may be some CNNesque condecension in these listings…

“Here deary…make a few pennies doing this so you can stay home and be a baby factory… unlike us power broads in the BIG CITY!”

Nice list, I would suggest virtual assistant as well. The pay is on par with most in person assistant jobs, and you have more flexability.

How can u help me,ive never worked.Only work i ever did were raising kids.My husband never wanted me to work, but I really want to help.

    Hi Cylester,

What you could do is write articles for blogs or websites about whatever you know about. You’d be suprised at what’s out there. For example, you say you’ve never worked, so maybe you’re great at cooking, or gardening…so just surf the net and type in ‘gardening blogs’ or ‘cooking blogs’. Write to the owner of the site and tell them you will wirte articles for them in return for $$$. There are MANY sites looking articles.

    Hope this helps.

I’d recommend looking into Adsense Revenue Sharing sites. It can be a decent source of extra income, especially when they add paid blog posts, etc.

Here’s my list I’m compiling of sites: http://www.reviewerofsites.com/2007/10/16/the-internets-largest-list-of-adsense-revenue-sharing-sites/
