Interesting bit of information, however, I would like to know it’s origin. Because of the demand of produce all over the country, I can’t see a produce house taking the risk of shipping without knowing it’s destination. My husband has been an owner/operator(tractor and trailer) for 25 years and this is the first I’ve heard of such. Considering the product usually isn’t even harvested until the day it’s picked up most of the time. And for the high demand, the buyers are very picky about the condition of the load when it arrives, even discount markets. But hey, just because I’ve never seen it doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. There could very well be a good opportunity.
Liz is writing about this post, in which David Tufte said
Did you know that produce companies in California routinely ship fresh produce east without a final destination?
Tufte did post a followup comment, but unfortunately didn’t provide any other details about the origin of this information.
Does anyone have any information to add?
