Can Blogging Produce a Passive Income?

ProBlogger:

The question I’ve been asked a number of times by friends is whether my blogging strategy is one in which I’m building a passive income?

Its a good question which I’d like to answer in the affirmative – but am beginning to see that I can not. When I first started blogging with a commercial mindset I had lofty dreams of my blogs getting to a point where they would be able to earn me an ongoing large amount of money – Passive. My hope that blogging would enable me to not only give up my day job but that it would enable me to give all of my time to community and charity projects that would benefit others (my true passion).

I’ve been asking myself this same questions recently, and like Darren, don’t think that the medium is conducive of a passive income. By definition, weblogs are frequently updated websites. If I leave a site fallow, it will continue to earn advertising revenue, but eventually the free traffic will all but dry up.

Luckily the effort required to maintain and grow the site is not great, so maybe we can agree that blogging creates almost passive income.

  • ‘almost passive’ has a nice ring about it. I don’t think I’d ever want to be completely passive about the way I earn my income anyway.

  • That may be the wrong question. After all, you can blog from anywhere with internet access, you can post whatever time of day you are free. The hardest part is building the traffic when you start out. Keeping good content on an established blog (or group of blogs) may not be passive but it’s fun; it’s something I’d be doing anyway, so why would you want to ‘retire’ from it?

  • I think the internet is a fertile landscape where the right idea can produce massive income. Passive income is the leverage of the wealthy and a key to financial independence. I think that just about all online income (with the exception of direct sales) is passive. In the sense that you get paid many times for work you do once, I guess your strategy does produce passive income. The income surely isn’t linear like traditional jobs.

  • Can Blogging Create Passive Income?

Dane Carlson ponders is passive advertising on a decently trafficked blog enough to sustain a living?

  • Tom’s point is a good one. If passive income rests on the foundation of traffic then traffic generation becomes the task and the income isn’t passive anymore. But if that traffic generation can be outsourced for a share of the income – affiliates, members, readers etc – then passive income becomes a more likely reality.

  • It seems you are developing a good reputation in the passive income world. Could you update us on how this blog is helping you generate passive income?

  • I don’t know how blogging can help generate passive income. But everywhere must be the first :-) Make businness on your blog. Good luck.

  • Building a massive income on your blog is surely possible. You have to have the right mindset, however, ridding your mind of limiting beliefs. There are a few ideas and concepts people consider and take into action to make anything you want come true.

    1. The Law of Attraction

Neural research shows that when you think positively towards a certain idea or object, every time you think of it in the future, positive neural chemicals are released in your brain, influencing you to take a positive stance on whatever it is your are thinking about. The same happens with negative thoughts. Learn to control your mind and you will be able to accomplish anything, as well as be able to adapt to adverse situations.

    2. Cause and Effect

We see the world of tangible phenomena; we don’t see the vastly greater world that gives rise to it. That vastly greater world is the world of cause. Newton used the principle of cause and effect as it operates in the physical, mechanical world as the basis of his laws of thermodynamics: every action has an equal and opposite reaction. What the science of Newton’s day did not yet grasp was that matter, energy and consciousness are not distinct and separate domains, but are all simply different frequencies along the same continuum. What they did not fully grasp, but science has now shown us, is that the principle of cause and effect applies not simply to the mechanics of matter, but to the mechanics of everything, including our thoughts. You must be practiced at creating the thoughts that will serve your business. The effect will come shortly after.

  • passive or almost passive, both are fine. just being able to work from home, even if it is work, is a great advantage.
