Make Money Erecting and Removing Real Estate Signs
LJS & Associates makes one thing: an 8-foot-tall post with a 4-foot crossbar that holds a sign. Hammered into the earth, the post stands 6 feet high. Built at Stefanski’s Odenton compound – the sign on the road says “Welcome to Iggyville” – they are shipped to eight warehouses around the area, from Wilmington, Del., in the north to Springfield, Va., in the south.A fleet of 31 trucks handles an average of 2,500 “stops” – each installation and removal is called a stop – per month.
…
The business seems about as low-tech as you can get. But Stefanski maintains LJS is actually a high-technology firm.
“The reason LJS is as successful as it is is because of the computer,” he said. “Anybody can drive around and put up a sign. The hard part is having information readily available for the customer.”
This is how it works: Real estate agents log on to LJS’ Web site to place their orders for sign installations or removals. Within two days, LJS installs and paints the post and hangs the sign – or it removes the post, fills the hole with dirt and puts a piece of sod over it.
“Everything is done by e-mail,” said Stefanski, explaining that the company then sends e-mails to agents, giving the date and time a sign was installed or removed.
