Kottke: “I’d never really thought about it before, but in some ways, [Craigslist] helps lots of people build businesses cheaper and more effectively than more “robust”, complex, and expensive enterprise software solutions. Movers are just one example. CL can help you find employees for your business. If you’ve got a van, you can pick up free furniture and electronics around the city, fix or refurbish, and sell it.”

I think this is true. However, Craigslist charges to advertise for employees in San Francisco and New York. Depending on the business, $25 to $75 may not be too onerous. (I can’t imagine trying to start a business in either place… I can’t imagine the paperwork to keep all the bureaucrats happy!)

I find them obnoxious to deal with and imperious however if you try to leave a URL.

If you’re in one of their major market areas that have good traffic and you have a small business… watch out. You could possibly do a major portion of your advetising there for free.

Depending on traffic though, to get a top listing, a small business may need to post then delete then repost several times per day to stay near the top of the listing.

It’d be worth the price for no cost ads though.
