Two New Franchise Blogs
I recently discovered two great new franchise blogs: Franchise Pundit by Ryan Knoll and Innovative.Franchising.Blog by Josh Dorkin. Ryan critiques franchises with his own brand of humor, classifying each potential opportunity as either “I wouldn’t buy it” or “I’d buy it”. Josh’s site is more franchise news related, with some longer original and reprinted articles.
Both are excellent reads with some outstanding franchising content not readily found elsewhere on the web.

Hi Dane. Thanks for the mention, I appreciate it. I just came across your blog today. Looks great! I’ll be back.
Cheers.

Hi Dane,
Working my way through your site, like the look alot. The tone is a good contrast with the sheer volume of ‘buy a franchise and make a million’ marketing that pulls in so many people.
Keep it up!

Does anyone know if Innovative.Franchising.Blog is up and running? I have tried it for a couple of days now and I haven’t been able to get through.

Franchise Business Advisors seems to be a fairly good site. When I looked around for a good franchise they were really good in helping me out.

I’m glad to see so many people interested in learning about franchising before they jump into it and get sold something that may not be right for them. I’ve discovered a great resource that is provided by people highly experienced in the industry that really explain benefits and pitfalls of buying a franchise. Their web site is http://www.thefranchiseprofessor.com, I hope this helps you!

I just wanted to pass my story along to you and hope it interests and entertains others. Thanks! Tony
Make Green By Going Green.
I had to write this article to let other entrepreneurs know what exciting possibilities there are out there in this new ‘Green” world. If you haven’t been paying attention there is a world wide phenomenon going on that is called Green or Eco-friendly. If you are not steering your business that way or if you are not looking to get into this green business juggernaut you are missing out on a huge pay day and/or a long time rewarding business experience.
Not only will you help reduce your own carbon foot print but you will attract more customers because people are looking for eco friendly businesses. By going green, my business in just over one year, went from $7,000 per month to $75,000 per month. I went from 30 customers to well over 300 customers with more climbing on the green wagon every day.
I have even been approached to franchise my concept all over the world. Going green apparently rewards you with more green.
It is truly amazing how my life has changed this past year. I got involved with starting an eco-friendly cleaning company and as a result of going green I have watched in awe as my revenue grows month after month. It has not only changed my life financially but it has positively impacted the health and lives of thousands of people as well. I went into this business, not having a lot of money to invest, but wanting to do something that was good for the environment as well as good for the planet and other people. I know that cleaning homes and businesses with non hazardous chemicals will help add years to the lives of our customers, their children and pets, our workers and help heal the environment too.
The Green Mop (my business) afforded me the opportunity to move from a cramped apartment, where I also ran the business, to a beautiful new 4700 square foot home that last year was priced at $1.1 million (got it for $800,000 in this current market environment). I also bought a brand new SUV Hybrid with cash and I see no end in sight for the growth and expansion of my eco-friendly green enterprise.
What I did you can do too by steering your existing or new business in a green direction.
I have seen the proof that if you do right for people, the environment, and yourself by focusing on being good stewards of the earth, the floodgates of green prosperity will open up to you.
So, lesson your foot print, enrich the lives of others, steer your business green and watch your prosperity grow.

Blogs are a great way to educate entrepreneurs about the Franchise industry. Along with franchise for sale directories like Franchise Farm (www.franfarm.com) they serve as good resources for research.

The past post is very true. There is lots of Franchise Consultancy advice out there and many opportunities. It definitely pays to do some research first.

I was just curious how you can rate a newer franchise opportunity out there. Franchises that are new to the world are usually very motivated to help franchisees but they don’t have much of a track record to go off of. I have been looking into buying multi-units of http://www.illuminategym.com. I love the concept but they don’t have much of a track record with multe-unit franchisees. Please help.

Whilst domestic cleaning is a growing service industry the predators are growing too. I’ve saldy been badly burned in my dealings with Kingsmaid, a UK based Franchisor of cleaning services.
I should have been suspicious when I couldnt get financial information from them or from the franchisees, the latter had been instructed not to disclose any actual sales figures. This is despite a UK court directive, following the prosecution of a different franchisor for fialing to disclose the financial plight many of its franchisees were in.
The training was just truly awful, delivered by inexperienced “trainers” who had only a few months of experience working for the company, who seemed to think that reading powerpoints out to us constituted training.
It doesnt stop there, I was forced to buy maps (which we were told were “compulsory”, excessive stock (2 years on I am still using it!) and given little or no support or guidance on hiring staff, contracts etc etc.
There are another 8 franchisees who have walked away (from a total of 12) which will give you some indication of widespread nature – I am not just an isolated individual who has failed and wants to blame someone – I now operate my own succesful cleaning business!
There really is too much to get down here, but buyer beware, Kingsmaid franchising is very much a rip-off.

Hi Dane
Good to see views on franchising getting aired and discussed and will be popping over to the other blogs you suggested here.
@Tony.. Its a shame to hear of your experience… sadly there are some bad eggs out there but on the whole by doing your home work and running it past the BFA you can weed out most of them and be left with a shortlist of decent opportunities. Chatting to existing franchisees is a must also to find out also what their views are and what support and backup they receive. A decent franchise should be providing a good level of support as your success means their success in the long term.

You should also check out the franchise blog at http://www.illuminategym.com . The blog is all about the fitness industry but they have some extremely funny look at some other franchises and they show you how illuminate gym is learning where other franchises have failed.
