Even if you can’t find people who are willing to enter into a collaborative conversation in your business community, all is not lost! There is a wonderful organization called SCORE, Service Core of Retired Executives. SCORE is a volunteer based non-profit organization with the purpose of helping business owners succeed.

I searched through the list of SCORE’s volunteer counselors until I found one who, among other experiences, ran a computer support business much like mine. I sent him an email telling him what marketing I’ve tried and asking how I could get more customers. He replied with a great e-mail addressing the specifics of my e-mail and included a huge zip file with everything anyone would need to know to start a computer support company.

He sent, among other things:

  • his business plan
  • details on what marketing worked for him
  • clipped articles about my business
  • sample invoices and other forms
  • a sales sheet with the services he offers
  • his pricing model

It was an absolute treasure trove of information from a successful business doing exactly what I am doing. He went on to ask me to write him back with followup questions and let him know what works for me.”
