Government Grant For Small Business?
Is there any truth to the myth that there are government grants for small businesses?I get calls from people that have paid to attend a seminar. The then pay someone to prepare a grant proposal for them and submit the proposals and wait. No one I have spoken to has been able to say that they got money to start a small business.
I have not been able to find anything that even comes close to free money or grants. Sure there are web sites that will sell you a list or write a grant proposal. But I have found no one that has actually got any money.
Therefore I lay down the challenge to anyone who can show me a legitimate government grant program for starting a small business.
Well, how about it? Does anyone know of anything?

I work with government grant recipients to some degree, but not grants related to businesses per se.
I guess by grant you mean a “non-loan”.
There are grants that would be available to service providers. Sylvan the franchise education provider has a “government contract” side that provides GED completion to out of school youth. We call these grants in a sense but it’s contract for service and is paid out as services are provided.
So you might say this whole aspect of their business… millions of dollars is from non-loans.
There are many smaller local service providers in similar businesses that tend to be related to the human service field.
Those are the ones I’m familiar with off the top of my head.
It’s probably not the definition of “grant” you’re seeking though.

National Growth Funding- on September 16th, 2009 12:50 pm
National Growth funding is a local company in san antonio tx, that offers assistance in grant writing. My family had been looking for over 6 months to find a way to expand our business. Unfortunately in this economy it’s very difficult to find the money $ to grow our company. National growth funding had actually contacted us after we filled out a form online and they politely offered their services to us. So far we are taking baby steps , but we hope to have something going within the next few weeks. Anyways we just wanted to let others know about our status.
thanks

Pat, have you done business with NGF since your post? I am looking into their services but i am skeptical and would like to talk to someone who has done business with them. I see some positive testimonials online but for all i know NGF posted those themselves.

National Grant Writing Authority is in las vegas and seems to offer a full service grant writing process. Online there are many companies that have scam complaints, but http://www.ntlgrants.com offers a website with a ton of info.

I’m not expert on grant writing and research, but teh BBB has national growth funding with an A rating – so I’d say that is a starting point
