An Academic & A Social Worker Go Into Business — As Cleaners!
In their earlier professions, Jane and Ty Branam weren’t exactly cleaning up.Jane, a Ph.D. in foreign languages, taught at Johnson C. Smith University and had grown weary of watching students pursue careers more lucrative than hers.
Meanwhile, her husband, Ty, had tired of the bureaucracy at the Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services, where he was a team coordinator.
They wanted to make a break and go into business for themselves. But what kind of venture would be suitable for an academician and a social worker with no business experience?
“The deck was kind of stacked against us,” says Jane, who was teaching Spanish at Johnson C. Smith University at the time. “I knew I did not know enough about business.”
The pair eventually decided to buy into a commercial cleaning franchise of The ServiceMaster Co., establishing a local operation called ServiceMaster Cleaning Excellence in 2001.

The social worker should write a book or at least an article comparing his time in government to his time running a franchise.
I remember after working with youth who were at the bottom rung of the ladder, I was asked to evaluate some youth for a scholarship.
I’d been working with messed up kids long enough that I waw suprised that there were actually kids who made straight A’s, whose parents still lived together, and who were not in juvenile court trouble!
Perhaps he’ll be shocked to find that with hard work, people may not NEED social workers.
In fact, I’d say that if the law gave men a fair shake when a family divorces and allowed them some rights, you’d see alot less need for social workers. It’s the absense of males from the home that predicts much wrong behavior.
But think how many government people would be out of a job if we stressed fatherhood and self-relince!
Perhaps this guy can tell his story!
