The Fear Factor

Fear! All of my self-employed clients and everyone I talk to who has made the leap vividly recall the fear and doubt they went through as part of their journey. Clients who are still on the fence struggle with the fear of the unknown: ‘What will happen to me if I leave my safe job?’ they say — to which I always say, ‘What will happen to you if you don’t?’

Almost every book about starting your own business will walk you through the nuts and bolts, but hardly any will discuss the inner journey in any depth. And it’s the inner journey, let’s face it, that has the potential to trip us up far more than not having the shiniest marketing materials or the most polished elevator speech.

One book that does offer guidance and support through these tricky waters is Suzanne Mulvehill’s Employee to Entrepreneur: The Employee’s Guide to Entrepreneurial Success. It’s loaded with great exercises and stories from Suzanne’s own journey, as well as those of her clients’. I highly recommend it.

  • A critical component to starting your own business is confidence and self-awareness. You need to know what you are good at and where you will need help. You also have to believe that you can replicate the success you have experienced in working for others when you go out on your own.

    None of this is easy. The truth of the matter is that at least 80% of the success of an entreprineur is related to attitude and 20% or less is related to having a good plan. In with that 80% is having the guts to follow through and execute.
