Starting Up Always Feels the Same

It’s funny that no matter how many times you go into startup mode, it always feels like doing it again for the first time. There’s the wild-eyed enthusiasm of the brilliant new idea, quickly followed up by the sleep-deprived anxiety of having risked everything to develop that idea. Then somewhere along the line the idea turns into a real profitable company and everyone looks back and wonders how it all happened.

For as serendipitous as this entire process may seem, it’s almost formulaic. The fears and emotions that we experience in startup mode are shared uniformly across just about every entrepreneur from the most brazen to the most timid. What I learned after being in the early stages of over a half dozen startups (some great, some bad) is that the process is almost exactly the same every time.

I’ve broken the process down into three phases. I’m willing to bet that just about anyone who’s started a company can appreciate the process and that anyone who is starting a company now can take comfort in the fact that wherever they are now it’s a perfectly normal place to be.

Its a sinking sensation that forces you to reflect and second guess yourself on all of the decisions youve made up until that point. It probably feels like you made a really big mistake.” [...]
