Boy, what a difference a month, a million extra visitors and over ten thousand new links make:
On October 10th, when I launched the How Much is Your Blog Worth service my weblog was worth* $125,327.88. Today, it’s over $5 million!

Not to toot my own horn, but I’d call my little viral marketing experiment a success.
We all know that these aren’t real numbers, but they do indicate a level of popularity in the blogosphere.

So now what this makes me really wonder is, I wonder what the curve looks like for the increase in the total “blog market cap” over time?
Seems like you could potentially come away with a rather stark visual representation of the Jumping Jesus phenomenon.

Dane, not to take the toot out of your horn, but I’d be interested to see whether it’s you that’s popular, or your service. While you’ve launched a successful viral marketing campaign, I also visite your site because of it and added you to my RSS to read on an ongoing basis.
It would be interesting to know what % of folks are sticking around for your other posts versus just plugging their website in to your service and being done with it. Did you see a jump in RSS subscriptions etc., as well?
Brad on November 16th, 2005 at 4:40 pm
I agree. Is this really your blog or just the “How much is my blog worth” site?
Dane on November 16th, 2005 at 5:33 pm
Of course its totally the “How much is your blog worth,” but that’s the point. Build something cool, release it and watch the magic.
Dustin Diaz on November 16th, 2005 at 10:14 pm
I generally just watch the technorati traffic links go up. I’m caving in on a hundred grand in just a few more days…. successful experiements will do that to you.
Reeves Little on November 17th, 2005 at 3:00 pm
Chris has an interesting point about the RSS feeds being an indicator of worth. If you are looking at the value of the blog purely as an advertising vehicle then readership is very important because it means eyeballs… but there are no ads in most RSS feeds. The measure of worth calculated by this service is really a measure of influence. The power of a Robert Scoble or David Pogue to shift opinion is hard to gauge.

Nice job, I am sure that this little tool has increased your value dramatically. I linked it to my site in a post, and so will others to show off their value… sort of a snow ball effect, nice job.

Can someone tell me where I can cash out? This reminds me of when I was a kid and Beckett magazine told me how much money all my baseball cards were worth, but I could never get half the Beckett value from anyone.
brem on November 22nd, 2005 at 9:35 am
Do you mean nobody would pay that much for your blog?
How sad, eh? :-)

Why doesn’t it work with all sites? Some of my fave sites strike a zero. For instance problogger.net which has over 6000 technorati links says $0

As of December 27th, your blog is worth $6,435,191.46 - and mine remains mired at $50000. Of course, for 50 grand, I would definitely sell out. In a nanosecond.

It really is cute but the prices set are rather debatable and subjective. After all, WHERE could one cash in on that?
Of course it has done a good job of marketing your site so I’m giving you kudos for that! Smart move Dane!
