The Direct Selling industry has nearly doubled in the U.S. over the last 10 years and Network Marketing is one of the least expensive ways to start your own home based business. Here is a short list of questions that may help you evaluate a Network Marketing company.
1. Would you buy the product for the retail price if you were not involved with the business?
I believe that all Network Marketing should start with the product. If you have a product that is remarkable, it will also be marketable. A successful networker must be willing to share the product and their experience with the product with others.
2. Does the compensation plan have a legitimate retail sales element to it?
Three quarters of the U.S. population have purchased products through direct sales - more than double the total number of people that have purchased through TV and the Internet. Companies that claim such things as “no selling” and “buy from yourself and teach others the same” are at risk with the FTC.
3. Is the company using a balance of today’s technology (conference calls, 3-way calls, podcasting, etc.) and face to face meetings?
Over 73% of direct sales ($21.5 Billion) take place face to face. That number is hard to ignore. Technology is great and companies should strive to take advantage of today’s trends to reach more people, but technology is not ready to replace a good old fashioned hand shake. At the same time, the days of leaving your home 5 nights a week to build your “home based” Network Marketing business are over. Balance is important here.
Overall the most important thing to remember when evaluating a Network Marketing company is to set the hype aside and look at facts. Product, Company Infrastructure, and Company Leadership should all be considered.

I think that one of the turn offs to most MLM/Pyramid’s is that you can’t make very much money at the bottom level. I don’t know how much soap you have to sell to make 10k a month or how many kitchen tools pays a mortgage and a car payment but I know it’s a lot. In the financial services industry there is a company that is designed like an MLM but at the bottom level, without any recruits, you can make a living wage each month just selling products. In fact it would be possible to make upwards of 5 to 10k a month just staying busy at the bottom level. That’s the sign of a company that can survive and create longevity for its sales force. Plus there are no products to sell, no invetory to keep, and no quotas to fill.
