I started my own tutoring referral business four years ago and have been so successful here in Southern California that I decided to sell my idea to others.
I wrote a manaul, packaged it with a website, customized accounting software, merchant account, marketing and sample ads and consulting and mentoring via the phone or email. I launched my company only four months ago and have sold eleven packages. I was an ex-franchisee and thought it was a waste of my money to pay royalties to someone else every month. So, I decided to document my experience with my own tutor referral service and sell it for a fraction of the price of a franchise. The response has been tremendous and I will be in Entreprenuer magazine this month, was featured in Woman’s World in November and have articles lined up through the spring in Family Circle, Redbook, Parenting magazine. Visit my websites and see what all the excitement is about. Become an entreprenuer and work from home and make fabulous money in the lucrative educational services industry. You don’t need to be a teacher or tutor to succeed. Visit http://www.hometutoringbusiness.com for more info.

My experience in starting a tutoring business has been very rewarding. Here is what happened. I knew a lot about business and marketing but I didn’t have a background in tutoring. So, I contacted one of my old high school teachers, Helen Gibson, who had taught for 40 years in Canada, Africa, Australia and China. She had also run her own tutoring business for 20 years. We became partners in Academy At Home at Toronto tutoring company.
We started our tutoring business with only one tutor and one student in September, 2003. Our tutoring business grew to 25 tutors and 100 students in 18 months, generating over $80,000 in the first year of operation and $120,000 in the second.
Our success exceeded our expectations. We decided to package and market the same system that made our business successful. We launched the Wealthy Tutor website in December 2004. We now market the same system that we used to launch our successful tutoring company to entrepreneurs who want to start their own tutoring business. To date we have sold hundreds of systems throughout the U.S., Australia, Canada, and the UK. Everyday I get to relive the same thrill I experienced when I first launched my own tutoring company by helping people all over the world achieve similar results.

How long did it take to get a tutoring business off the ground and when did you start to see a profit?

I am an online Math tutor. Was wondering if anyone out there would like to partner up (you refer the students that you don’t have the time to take up and take your share). My online tutoring rate, by the way, is pretty low ($12 per hour for middle graders).

We decided to go in a different direction with perfect800.com and structured our focus on the SAT and a learn by doing approach. We give kids and coaches the ability to understand strengths and weaknesses, by providing more advanced metrics on how students perform on SAT questions by difficulty level, question type, time, etc. We feel this will allow kids to in turn focus on where they need the most help. For instance, if a student struggles with ratios, but gets geometry down, then why waste the money and time having a tutor review geometry?

The comments that I’ve read have been quite encouraging. I tutor math and reading for school aged children as well as adults. I have worked in the “corporate arena” for more than a decade and have since started my own business. I currently have several students that I service weekly. Since I am looking to ramp up my business I thought I’d do a little research.
Thanks for the ideas.
