Linkbaiting is An Art
I don’t normally toot my own horn but this was just too good to pass up:

And the most successful piece of link bait tool I have ever witnessed is the “How much is your blog worth?” calculator by Dane Carlson of Business Opportunities Weblog. I am sure half of you here have encountered this nifty Technorati-powered script. The little applet uses Technorati’s API which computes and displays your blog’s worth using the same link to dollar ratio as the AOL-Weblogs Inc deal. The script has generated an estimated 32,247 links from 17,060 sites which basically brings the Business Opportunities Weblog to No. 2 on Technorati’s 100 most popular blogs, next to Boingboing.

I agree that is was a work of genius. If you wanted to make it even better you could have it be dynamic, meaning that as a blog’s value increased or decreased the value would change.

So why isn’t it on the top 100 then..? Have I missed something? :) Is their list just slow or is it fixed in some way?

Although this site doesn’t show up in the top 100 list, click the link and you’ll see that it’s listed currently as number three.
I think it’s not on the list because of some kind of filter against sites that rise too fast in the ranks.

Hi, Dane! I found your blog through the applet meantioned here, which I found on Sun Comprehending Lass’s blog. I thought it was totally cool and have added it to by blog as well.
I would like to echo Art and encourage you to make it dynamic. That would be beyond cool!
And, by the way, I think we should all toot our own horns every once in a while! COngrats on the great write-up!

Great article! I have a couple of questions though: a) does Google have existing penalties for the term ‘linkbaiting’ and b) what do you think of the term ‘linkbaiting’?

Terrific work…I love link bait. As long as you’re providing value, why shouldn’t you deserve a link?

It’s the kind of idea you wish you had thought of yourself!
