The Future of eBay

Chicago Tribune:

Q. I thought my stock in eBay Inc. would have done better. What does the future hold?

J.K., via the Internet

A. Contrary to popular opinion, you can’t buy everything on this aggressive international online trading platform.

The company scrapped plans to permit the sale of various live pets last year after receiving thousands of angry messages from users who believed this would encourage breeders to launch unsavory “puppy mills” to meet the increased demand. It does, however, continue to sell fish and snails online.

The eBay story remains a dramatic and innovative one.

Sellers and buyers in more than 20 countries are matched on a wide variety of items that include jewelry, used cars, boats, clothing, computers and books. It is especially dominant in the United States, Germany and South Korea, with expansion under way in countries such as China, India and the Philippines.
