The IRS and eBay Sales

KUTV:

If you’re like millions of Americans you’ve bought or sold something on eBay.

For those who sell, Bill Gephardt says sometimes they get a surprise from the Internal Revenue Service.

Online auctions sellers fall into two groups, people selling personal belongings or businesses going on-line to sell their stuff.

The Internal Revenue Service tells me that when filing your taxes those who sell their own stuff…shoes…barbeques…whateverdon’t have to claim those earnings.

If you are selling the item to make a profit above and beyond what you paid the feds consider you’re running a small business and must claim those earnings.

The IRS says if you’re selling a personal item, you are merely recouping what you spent on it so there’s no need to claim it.
