Triple crown a massive dog boarding center specializing in training for dogs and trainers, sits on nearly 400 acres in the Williamson County suburb of Hutto. Dog shows, trials and national specialty events are held at the academy’s 32,000-square-foot event center. Now, the 12-year-old academy — which began as a six-kennel center in the Tucson, Ariz., backyard of CEO Jerry Wolfe — is undergoing a growth spurt. After three years of planning and more than $100,000 invested in development, the company is launching a national franchise division. Triple Crown moved to Hutto in 1997.

Although Triple Crown plans to grow the franchise concept slowly, the company’s five-year goal is to establish more than 300 franchises across the country, says Keith Benson, Triple Crown’s president and chief operating officer.

“There are over 50 requests we’re seeing in our database now,” Benson says. “But initially, we’ll be very selective. Within the first year, we’ll only award a handful of franchises.”

That’s because Triple Crown — an $8 million company — wants to ensure it can maintain the same level of service at the franchise level that it does at its Hutto campus.

Prospective franchisees can choose from three models: a full-service training, behavior and boarding center; a training and behavior-enhancement center that can be incorporated into an existing boarding or veterinary business; and a mobile operation.
