Sarah Bosch continues her reviews this week with David Lorenzo’s Career Intensity: Business Strategy for Workplace Warriors and Entrepreneurs.

What is it that separates the best from the rest? More importantly, how can you become the best? In his new book, David Lorenzo challenges readers to turn their passion and drive into a competitive career advantage. Through career intensity – the drive for continuous individual improvement – anyone can become a successful professional.

Lorenzo’s message is simple. “I want to help people create value, capitalize on opportunity, and always let the world know how great they truly are!” To do this, Lorenzo outlines the goals of career minded individuals which we can all benefit from. They include persistence, strategy, developing and working toward goals, and using preparation to take advantage of opportunity.

Throughout the book, Lorenzo outlines four basic types of people in the workforce: Intrepreneurs, Entrepreneurs, Workplace Warriors and Management Mavericks. Only two of those categories generate individual value – the intrepreneurs and the entrepreneurs. A workplace warrior, for example, is someone who just puts in his time on the job while the intrepreneur consistently develops new ways to improve the value of his company’s business and is good at gaining advocates along the way.

I particularly liked the section on personal branding. Lorenzo believes it’s important for a person to discover their unique value, and develop his or her brand much like a company would. By personal branding, Lorenzo says that we will be better able to put ourselves in a position for personal success.

I enjoyed the practical way this book was written and the stories that Lorenzo uses in order to drive his points home, thought personal experience and example. Lorenzo has done a good job of noting what has worked and what hasn’t for companies aiming towards success paying particular attention to the achievers who have had a competitive advantage in these companies. What he found is outlined in the book. Using this framework, he has designed a strategy to help anyone find success and personal fulfillment.

I believe Career Intensity by David Lorenzo to be a valuable read for anyone in any stage of life. It will guide you through your journey in the corporate world and help you get the most out of your career to enrich your life. It’s a great book worthy of your investment.
