WSJ:
Blogs have a lot of buzz, but there’s still considerable debate about whether that can translate into profits. While many blogs remain little more than amateur diaries, several bloggers have tried to parlay their online ramblings into branded businesses. One, Jason Calacanis, co-founded Weblogs Inc., a network of blogging sites that was acquired last year by AOL. Mr. Calacanis has been an outspoken proponent of blogs as business vehicles, arguing that quality content can drive enough traffic to attract advertisers.
But longtime Internet entrepreneur Alan Meckler is skeptical. Mr. Meckler, who is chief executive of Jupitermedia Inc., believes that some blogs may achieve a measure of success, but doubts most blogs will be able to generate meaningful profits.
Of course, my answer is yes.

At the end of the day, earning money by blogging is similar to earning money in Internet by writing. I think blogging has a good future because it gives the reader an instant opportunity to participate in discussion just like chatting. More and more ads will go towards blogs and ofcourse quality content will rule in the end. Many people (more than 90%) think that blogging is similar to writing diary or you dont need special skill for blogging. Needless to say that people with casual attitude to anything can never shine in it.

Blogging is not only fun, but is certainly a way to earn money for someone who is determined to do so.
I think the style of writing used in blogs is much more relaxed and likely to put people in a frame of mind to buy, as opposed to the conventional website.

It seems that it is possible for popular and successful blogs to make money - although it seems to take time to build up that kind of following.
However, it seems more people are successfully making good money with websites than they currently are with blogs - I guess we’ll have to keep watching.

It’s all about being different and finding your niche. Do that and you can bet you will be sucessful but it’s not as easy as it sounds. For instance, Political blogs are the biggest things going but you probably won’t compete with them so you must backdoor them and come at them with a different angle such as “A blog about how teenagers view the pol;itical world”. Political blog for teens would be different.
