Make It Easier to Beat a Path to Your Door

Since childhood, we have all been bombarded with “wise” sayings that we never questioned. For many people, these platitudes and cliches have become cornerstones of their personal and entrepreneurial foundations. Unfortunately, many of these sayings will lead the entrepreneur astray.

Perhaps most damaging is the saying: “Build a better mousetrap and the world will beat a path to your door.” Engineers and inventors are particularly vulnerable, because the idea itself seems so logical. Many excellent new products and concepts that should have succeeded, fail miserably because they were never marketed.

Too many people spend their time over-engineering their ideas, trying desperately to get from 98% to 100%, when they would have been better served marketing and selling their product. They should be out planting sign-posts and spreading the word, and talking to customers about how they can improve their offering. Too many entrepreneurial ventures wither and fail because the world never had an opportunity to beat a path to their door.
