Picking Your eBay Name
A reader called the Herald inquiring if she should use the same eBay user name to sell items that she has been using to buy.
By all means, this is a great thing to do, and preferable to handling two accounts. Not only do you build up a reputation in both areas, you also build up your feedback record, as all feedback points, whether received as a buyer or as a seller, are applied to the one user name.
But whatâs in a name? Quite a lot, actually. This is your opportunity to choose a name that suits you and your personality, your business, your hobby and possibly your sense of humor. Itâs important to consider how serious you want to get into selling, and whether you have a user name that is appropriate to both buying and selling.
My own eBay user name is âmisuryan.â? This was derived from the first two letters of my husbandâs and my first names (Mike and Susan), plus our last name (Ryan). We didnât really know how to pronounce it, until a customer made the connection with the state we live in. It is now officially pronounced âMissourian,â? and led to my choice of eBay store name â âMissourian Mercantile.â?

I do not agree with using the same user name on eBay for your selling and your buying. I have about 500 positives for each account. However, it happens rarely, but when I get in a dispute with a seller, and they threaten negative feedback for me, I point out that I do not much care if they do, because this is my “buying” account and since I rarely bid more than 10 seconds before the end of an auction, it does not affect me in the least. That usually gets the seller to settle our problems with fairness to all. I have only one neg on my buyers account, and that was retaliation from a seller, who sent me a junk doll and would not let me return it. But that kept my selling account safe, and it still boasts 100% positive.

I want to know who can pronounce or spell “Missourian.” To me, that makes that name not so great with respect to being memorable or to be spelled correctly by people who might actually say it to each other.
