Neighborhood grocery stores are as scarce as hen’s teeth — even in densely populated cities like San Francisco — as Wal-Mart, Kroger, Safeway and other big chains grind independent grocers into dust.

That’s why I’m so intrigued by the little Bi-Rite Market near my house, which about 10 years ago turned itself into a high-end specialty grocer along the lines of Zabar’s in New York.
