Ebay Starts Joint Venture with PChome
PChome Online, a leading web portal in Taiwan, on June 5 announced that it will set up a joint venture with eBay to establish a brand-new local on-line auction service to replace PChome’s existing on-line auction channel and eBay’s Taiwan auction web site by the end of this year.
PChome chairman Hung-tze Jan signed the deal with eBay vice president for Asia-Pacific Jay Lee on June 5. PChome will have more than a 50% stake in the venture and will be responsible for its operation, Jan indicated.
The joint venture will integrate eBay’s on-line auction know-how and global operating experience with PChome’s successful e-commerce business operations to create a new on-line auction environment in the Taiwan market, Jan pointed out. The new platform will feature dual selling modes, price bidding and direct sales at a pre-set price without bidding, Jan noted. This is eBay’s third joint venture following cases in South Korea and Latin America, Jan added.
eBay is currently the second largest provider of on-line auction services in Taiwan, with Yahoo! Kimo being the largest and PChome the third largest. PChome, however, is the largest operator of on-line shopping services in Taiwan.
