Idea: DVDs That Teach Children to Eat

After watching Franklin, our six month old, sit on the floor captivated by Baby Einstein videos, the educational* DVDs for infants and toddlers, and Emerson, our preschooler, at the dinner table refusing to eat his mashed potatoes, my wife had an idea.

  • Children love commercials. They immediately want anything advertised.
  • Children readily identify with and mimic anything they see on TV.

Why not make a series of videos that teach children to eat? Imagine twenty minutes of catchy music and short vignettes of bright-eyed children gobbling up their asparagus and pot roast. I’m sure that parents would buy them like crazy — I know we would!

Update: Since my wife originally came to me with this idea, she and Emerson were watching Maisy, and one of the characters was eating blueberry pie. Emerson looked up at her and asked earnestly “Mom, can I have a piece of blueberry pie? It’s my favorite?” He’s never had one before.

* Baby Einstein videos may or may not be educational, but they do keep infants occupied long enough to brush your teeth.
