As a distinct business vehicle, franchising was introduced into China in the early 1990s. With a population of more than 1.3 billion, an average economic growth of 9.4% for more than 20 years, a GDP per capita exceeding >1000 as well as entering into the World Trade Organization, franchising has been positively booming during the last 10 years.

According to a survey by the China Chain Store & Franchise Association, there are over 1900 franchise systems with around 87000 franchised outlets covering more than 40 categories in China at present. Due to the acceleration in the growth of China’s economy and increased living standards, the Chinese people are becoming more and more brand conscious. This includes an increasing number of young, well-educated entrepreneurs and prospective franchisees that are eager to develop their businesses, careers and lives by owning a franchise. These factors are encouraging international franchisors to expand into China.

Among the international brands that have already begun to establish retail outlets in China and have made significant headway are McDonald’s, KFC, Subway, The Athlete’s Foot and Century 21 Real Estate. China is becoming a focal point in the world franchising market.
