Reclined underneath a bright blue shade umbrella, Scott Proffitt enjoys a Sunday afternoon at the beach with his family.
His small children build a sandcastle nearby, while his sunbathing wife applies sunscreen to her face. She sips ice cold water and then passes the bottle to her husband, who carefully drinks to avoid a spill . . . on his laptop computer.
To people such as Proffitt, who must work on their weekends or while vacationing, the new wi-fi technology at Sarasota, Florida’s county public beaches makes surfing the Internet more convenient.
“I can enjoy my vacation with my family,” said Proffitt, a retail buyer visiting from Alabama. “I can access urgent e-mails and documents from my company and from my vendors, and still enjoy my vacation.”
