Marilyn Hagerty at Grand Forks Herald:
Would you like to get away from it all? Do you need someone to feed your frog? Are you wondering how to move your parents into assisted living? Would music soothe your sorrow? The needs of people like you and me are being met by people behind the scenes.
- It’s called the “Girlfriend Getaway.” It offers a chance for women to break away to area attractions and a weekend adventure. It’s the brainchild of twin sisters - Michelle Levin and Marci Turenne-Hansen. Michelle says they like to stop at out-of-the-way places that people drive past and say they should stop there sometime, but never do. The trips, which cost $160 a person, are usually within a 300 mile radius with stops and entertainment along the way.
- Shelley Pohlman, started her own Pet Nanny business after she couldn’t find anyone to take care of her geriatric dog, Lucky when she goes out of town. One ad is all it took, and she was deluged with calls. Shelly cares for more than dogs. She waters plants. She tends to other creatures. Once, she took care of a frog and she fed it live crickets.
- Corrine and Jim Iverson, who learned through experience that the hardest part of moving parents into assisted living facilities is cleaning out the house or apartment and taking care of the little things. So the Iversons have developed a sideline business of helping the elderly make that move. Some of their clients have no family to help and cannot manage alone. The Iversons clear out clutter and make arrangements to save or move other possessions.
- Deborah Clayton knows that music soothes the soul. She distributes her piano music through her company, Suite Afton Productions. She recently has added two partners who lend their voices to recordings in a product line called Loving Presents. Their latest CD is “Reflections on Loss and Grief.” It is designed for the time of grief after the flowers are faded and the hot dish is gone.
