If you can’t beat ‘em, as the saying goes, join ‘em.

As TV news broadcasts face increasing competition for viewer eye time from the Internet, stations have taken the fight to the Web. Today, every local TV news operation has an accompanying Web site.

Local TV news broadcasts have been losing viewers for years, studies show. Stations are looking at their Web sites as a way to build and expand their relationships with viewers, said WHAS-TV general manager Robert Klingle.

Local TV news Web sites offer content not available over the air, including e-mail traffic alerts, horoscopes and Soduku games.

“We went into this with the idea that the Web site is like a second TV station,” said WAVE-TV general manager Steve Langford.
