MarketWatch:

A growing number of college campuses are in the throes of banning the use of Skype, the Internet phone feature owned by eBay Inc., saying the technology is capable of corrupting and crowding Internet networks.

It’s unclear how many people on the schools networks are using Skype, which is based on freely-available software known as voice over Internet protocol that lets an Internet connection make and receive free phone calls.

The University of California’s Santa Barbara and Dominguez Hills campuses already took similar steps. At issue is the way that Skype forces some users to become temporary transfer point for phone calls, which violates the universities’ network policies.

Moreover, the universities say using Skype use throttles network’s capacity while also giving hackers a way to get access to university servers.
