Microsoft’s recently launched Windows Live Expo bills itself as “a dynamic social listing service.” It is a free classifieds-style site with categories including Autos, Events, Housing, Jobs, Merchandise, People, Pets and Services.
The two categories of particular interest to eBay and online sellers are Merchandise and Services.
eBay Trading Assistants can place a listing in the Commercial Services sub-category, while online auction sellers will find 24 sub-categories to sell their items in the Merchandise category.
In addition to “For Sale” listings, you can also post “Wanted” listings. Users can browse Wanted listings and can contact you directly if they have the item you want for sale (whether or not it is listed already).
It isn’t quite as cloak-and-dagger as eBay’s Want It Now service because there are no fees to circumvent if the item is not already listed. The parties just decide on a price without bothering with a listing.
Other listing options available on Live Expo are the self-explanatory Swap or Free.

I can only imagine something set up by Microsoft can never really be free. I assume that Microsoft will collect all of your information ans use it some sort of back end marketing. In the same way that they use any information that you you may input when applying for a “free” hotmail account. I haven’t gone to investigate yet (and I’m sure I will) but, I am always sceptical to put any real e-mail address into anything like that. In a matter of weeks it will start filling up with all kinds of e-mails that someone in the 25-35 year old age range should be interested in.

It is not strange to see such convergence. From a user point of view, it was bound to happen and so it has.
The interesting thing to see will be whether this convergence creates synergy in the long run.
