Niche Biz: Wearable Art

HeraldToday.com:

Most of us only think we come up with our best ideas over Happy Hour. For Martha Schewe, that theory is tried and true.

Schewe, who creates wearable art – jewelry and handbags out of dominoes, bottle caps and vinyl records – thought up two of the lines for her business thanks to a couple of cocktails.

As she cleaned up after her kids, she came across some dominoes, drew on the back of one and sent it to her sister, who drew on another domino and sent that one to Schewe.

That went on for a while, and Schewe eventually made a necklace out of one of her sister’s creations. She then started making domino bracelets and selling them off her wrist in the grocery store.

Schewe and some friends were talking about things from their youth that don’t exist anymore, and vinyl records came up. A couple of glasses of wine later, she had sketched a handbag on a cocktail napkin. and now they’re part of Schewe’s Reborn Vinyl line, vinyl records made into funky purses.

Schewe sells her stuff at about 150 boutiques nationwide and on her Web site.
