Holiday Shipping Tips For Small Businesses

Forbes.com:

Santa’s got nothing on the United Parcel Service. On Dec. 20, the biggest package delivery company in the U.S. expects to ship some 21 million packages.

That’s one scary logistics nightmare, especially when the fortunes of scads of merchandisers–from the small online retailers to giants like Wal-Mart–hang in the balance.

The best advice. Start shipping now.

Typically, the Christmas shopping season reaches full speed the day after Thanksgiving, which this year falls on Nov. 23. After that, there are just 20 delivery days before Christmas (not including Saturdays).

Ground deliveries will peak on Dec. 20, snarling truck traffic. Shipping any later will cost you because the stuff will need to go by air.

One last thing to remember, if you fall behind, cry for help. UPS can make special accommodations, like hitching a trailer (at no additional cost) to accommodate large pickups.
