When trying to start something on the side while holding down a fulltime job, don’t forget about that daily block of time known as the commute. A 25 minute train ride each direction can add nearly an hour of “sit down at the laptop and get something done” work with - bonus - no distractions like telephones, kids or televisions.
Driving instead of taking the train? Your attention is taken (eyes on the road!) but it can be a good time to return some calls, or at least check the voice mail. Get yourself a micro voice recorder and work on planning out your day.
Has the local coffee shop got wireless? When the traffic is particularly heavy, camp out there, shoot off an email to the boss saying that you’re working remotely for a bit while the traffic dies down but that you’re online if anybody needs you. Then get whatever done that you want, for whichever business.
Don’t forget podcasts! If nothing else you can always listen, whether you’re driving, riding or walking across town.
