Small Business Connection:

Nearly three-quarters of workers in the survey by Discover Business Card say health-care benefits are a “very important” (47%) or “somewhat important” (24%) factor when they choose a job.

That means small companies that don’t offer the benefit are at significant disadvantage in recruiting and retaining workers, Discover says.

The survey of 1,000 small-business owners found that 60% of believe a government mandate to provide employee coverage would have a negative impact on their business.

Such mandates aren’t way off in the future. California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger recently unveiled a plan that would require medical coverage at all employers with 10 or more workers.
