eBay Being Asked to Stop Ivory Sales to US
Online auction giant eBay is allowing consumers to bid for elephant ivory products that can’t be imported legally into the United States, according to the International Fund for Animal Welfare.
It is against the law to bring ivory items into this country unless the product is certified as produced before 1947 and accompanied by a proof of age certificate, said a spokeswoman for the animal protection group. The U.S. law is designed to prevent African elephants from having their ranks depleted by poaching.
The group based its allegations on a recent survey conducted in the United States, Australia, China, Germany, the Netherlands, France and Canada. The group tracked 2,200 elephant ivory items listed on eBay Web sites and said more than 90 percent of the listings violated eBay’s own national wildlife policies.
