The Locavores
A new consumer trend is already catching on across the country. It’s all about local consumption, and people who practice it are appropriately naming themselves, “locavores.”
According to AdAge, consumers are becoming more obsessed with purchasing locally produced goods. It’s part of a national trend to shift market share back to locally owned businesses.
In fact, 52 small towns and cities across the U.S. are integrating a “Local First” campaign into their community. And farmer’s markets have soared from a mere 1,755 in 1994 to 4,388 last year.
Apparently, it’s not just about food. Michael Shuman, author of ‘The Small-Mart Revolution: How Local Businesses are Beating the Global Competition” said, “Going local is becoming a very important advertising hook.” He suggests large companies try seeking out local sourcing for goods to try to win consumer loyalty.
Already, Whole Foods has had to make some changes. For example, the chain has opened its parking lots on Sundays to farmers so they can sell directly to consumers. In addition, the store is changing its definition of local by only applying the term to a product that has traveled less than seven hours from farm to store.
