Demand Spreads For Mom's Almond Butter

Sacbee.com:

Jennifer Barney’s almond spread hit shelves in Fresno’s Whole Foods Market, Catalano’s Market and Sam’s Italian Deli & Market just about a year ago.

Already, she’s expanded the geographic footprint for her Barney Butter to 15 chain stores in 50 markets. It’s sold in Draeger’s Markets in the Bay Area, Harvest Ranch stores in San Diego, and the Market of Choice chain in Oregon, to name a few.

Her secret: She contacted the stores herself.

“I’m adding stores every week,” said Barney in a telephone interview just before rushing out to her daughter’s school awards ceremony.

The wife and mother of four spends mornings on the telephone trying to push her product and afternoons shuttling her children around to various activities.

Her life has changed considerably over the past year as her almond butter — which she created in her kitchen and considers a healthier option to peanut butter — has enjoyed a spike in sales. A 16-ounce jar of Barney Butter is sold in stores at prices ranging from $7.99 to $10.99, considerably more than peanut butter but a good deal less than some other almond butters.
