Mom Makes Life A Party

Farmington Daily Times:

Kathy Yates had spent 16 years at home, raising her daughter, when her world was turned upside down and she was forced to find work to help support her and daughter, Aubrey.

“After 16 years as a stay-at-home mom, I found myself needing to make a living for myself and my daughter,” Yates said. “I’d gone to work for Sears but found that after 16 years off, I was having a hard time working for somebody.”

Yates started doing research on the Internet, looking at her options. She discovered Discount Party Stores.

“Farmington had a few party stores, but here was one with a discount approach,” she said. “I think people in this area are very price conscious. I found a development company online who helps develop party stores. It’s not a franchise, but I did buy a package.”

According to the Discount Party Store Developers Web site, the company helps create business opportunities by helping clients create a destination retail store in the size range of 1,000-25,000 square feet, designed to cater to all party needs with multiple merchandising categories.

The company offers a package that covers every aspect of opening and running a retail business long term, states the Web site.

“It was a good thing for somebody who was out of touch,” Yates said. “I’d worked in retail before — in auto parts — but quit to raise my daughter. Back then, we were just getting into computers, so my (computer) skills were really lacking.”

Her lack of computer skills and being out of the work force for 16 years wasn’t enough to keep Yates from reaching for her dream, however.

“It was very scary,” she said, shaking her head at the memory. “I had a lot of support from my family and I had some financial support from a relative, and that really helped.”
