At a time when many national toy retailers are struggling, his TreeHouse Toys & Books in Eastwood Towne Center is growing – beyond the state’s borders.

Taylor has signed his first deal to franchise the concept. The first of three planned Brilliant Sky Toys & Books, the name the stores will take outside the Lansing market, should open later this year in the Phoenix area.”Certainly, we’ve been fortunate enough to be successful at it,” said Taylor, a former Kimberly-Clark Corp. logistics executive who with his wife, Sonia, came back to Lansing from Tennessee to open the store. “People come in all the time wondering where our other locations are, assuming we are a franchise.”

The Taylors, however, put together the store on their own – with no prior experience except for their time buying toys for their three kids, ages 11, 10 and 6. But the couple had a desire to return to Lansing from Knoxville, Tenn. There, they had a favorite local toy shop.

“It just dawned on us there wasn’t much like that up here,” Brent Taylor said.
