Stay-At-Home Mom Crafts New Career With Pillows
When Michele Stewart’s son, Caleb, was born three years ago, Stewart left her job as the information-technology manager of a Greensboro commercial real-estate company to be a stay-at-home mom. She had worked with the company for 12 years.
“It was a high-stress position. Becoming a mom meant a different kind of stress,” she said with a smile.
Stewart decided that she wanted to start a small business of her own but one that would not interfere with her primary reason for leaving her job. She created Stitching Memories, a business that unites her technological skills, sewing expertise and passion for quilting.
Stewart specializes in pillows that are made from digitally scanned photos. The photos may be treasured sepia-toned shots of family ancestors or bright pictures taken recently.
Stewart incorporates them into pillows and sews special labels that provide the details of the photographs.
So far, Stewart has used craft festivals such as Summerfest and the one at the Farmers Market to promote her business. She also makes appearances at a couple in the fall and spring, and one in the summer.
