USA Today:

Veterans who go into business ownership tend to be better educated and older than other entrepreneurs, the Census Bureau says in its first study of entrepreneurship among veterans.

The findings are timely as thousands of vets return to the U.S. from Iraq, Afghanistan and other locales to resume work. Many are likely to consider business ownership, rather than returning to corporate life.

The Census study, based on 2002 data, found veterans were more likely than other business owners to hold postgraduate degrees (19.2% vs. 17.3%) and less likely not to have graduated from high school (4.3% vs. 6%).

The role of veterans in entrepreneurship is substantial. Veteran business owners comprised about 3 million, or 14.5%, of the estimated 20.5 million owners of all firms responding to the Census Bureau’s survey.
