Why Workers Declare Their ‘Independence’

USA Today:

Stories about billionaire entrepreneurs might make you think people start businesses solely to get rich. But that’s not their main driver, I’ve found after years of talking to entrepreneurs. Now, comes a new survey that backs me up.

The folks at Discover’s small-business credit card asked small-business owners about independence. That was the subject of the credit-card company’s most recent monthly survey. Highlights from the survey:

  • 46% of owners started a small business to have more flexibility with their time or to be more independent.
  • Just 19% cited making more money as their main reason.
  • 61% would still choose independence over working for someone else -– even for more money.
  • 64% of owners agree it’s riskier to run a business than to work for a large company.
