Business deals during the Franchise International Malaysia 2007 (FIM2007) exhibition is due to jump 20 per cent to more than RM260 million, the head of an industry body said.

“The transactions include purchasing of franchise by franchisees from franchisors and buying of equipment for franchise business,” Malaysia Franchise Association (MFA) chairman Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir said.He was speaking at a news conference after the plenary session of FIM2007 conference in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

The two-day conference ends today, while the exhibition is for three days, starting today.

FIM2007 is jointly organised by the Ministry of Entrepreneur and Cooperative Development and MFA.

Mukhriz said 85 companies are joining this year’s exhibition, occupying 105 booths. Last year, there were 91 exhibitors and 103 booths.

“This year, we see an encouraging trend among exhibitors, as about half of them, or 43 companies, are first-time exhibitors,” he said.

More foreign companies are taking part in this year’s conference, which has a “four-star” rating from the World Franchise Council.

About 40 per cent of this year’s total exhibitors are foreign companies, compared with 30 per cent last year. They come from 13 countries such as the US, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates, Spain, China, Italy and Namibia.
